» Veisto invests in its machine shop in Mäntyharju Finland

Veisto has invested in a 1200 m² expansion of the machine workshop. This enables having the spare parts stock and assembly hall under the same roof, which has resulted in increased work efficiency. There are over 1000 shelf units, which clarify the functionality of the warehouse. A new hydraulics room has also been built, which has its own stock and working area. The room has its own pressurization, therefore enabling the assembly of hydraulics parts in extremely clean conditions.

» Veisto’s first Argentine Customer

Enrique Zeni is a 70.000m³/year pine sawn timber sawmill. It is located in Esquina city, in the East of Corrientes province (location rather isolated from the main pine forest-industry of Argentina). This sawmill also owns a large remanufacturing site, where they mainly make blocks, blanks and moldings. Zeni is the largest Argentine exporter of moldings (3500m3/year) which mainly goes to the North American market and used in the construction of houses as finishing, door and windows components.

Besides its 5.000 hectares of mainly young forest, Zeni has the policy to buy standing forests from third parties all over Corrientes provinces (going sometimes up to 500km to get its raw material). Therefore Zeni competes in disadvantage for its raw material with other sawmills which come from Misiones province to buy standing pine forest and located at closer distance from main forest areas.

Despite the fact that pine saw logs are relative cheap in Argentina (Ø18-25cm at € 20/m³; Ø25-30cm at € 23 m³; Ø 30-35cm at € 28 m³), prices have increased significantly in last two years, making it harder and harder every year for Zeni to continue bringing sawn logs from such large distances.

Therefore Zeni decided while waiting their main forest mass to get into harvesting age, to continue bringing sawn logs from long distances but to incorporate into their purchases what are known as pine pulp logs (Ø10-16 at € 10-16/ m³).

Patricio Zeni said “one of the main reasons for the purchase of the HewSaw has been the possibility it offers to process small diameter logs…”.

Besides being able to utilize the small logs they also get when they buy standing forest (usually located far away from their sawmill), now they can also utilize most of their small logs from their thinning operations at their own forest.

Patricio Zeni said “The small logs from our thinning operations used to be sent to a MDF factory and we basically got incomes to cover our thinning and transportation costs. Now we are sending chips to the MDF factory”.

Plant Manager, Carlos Constabel said “We are satisfied with Veisto’s and Inderfor’s after sales services. We were doubting a bit at first. This was mainly because we bought machines from US providers and, for instance, dry kilns from Germany, and we always got bad after sale services”

The HewSaw R200SE was ordered by Zeni in January 2005. The machine was installed and start-up took place in mid august. Today the machine is running and the sawmill is in the process to improve some of its components to better utilize the HewSaw.

From the side of Inderfor Oy (Veisto agent in Argentina) this whole deal has been a great opportunity and experience. Now we better know HewSaw as a product and its performance with slash pine from Argentina (which is very crocked, big knots, etc.).
