The Veisto Group started its operations in 1964 when the Rautio brothers developed the first balk hewing machine for their own use. With further product development it was turned into a canter ideal for sawing of small logs. Although the machine was originally developed for their own use, word of this revolutionary invention spread amongst the sawmillers. The groundwork was laid to manufacture the saw machine on a large scale.
1970's

The square timber markets recovered and Veisto balk hewing machines towed by a tractor were in demand again. The brothers together with some village workmen worked at the hewing stations around Finland. By year 1976 the brothers had set up more than ten stations. Koneveisto machines hewed the whole 100% of Finland’s square timber exports, 300 000 m3 per year at its best.

The changes in Egypt’s political situation and several new regulations resulted the square timber markets slowing down and eventually the market collapsed by the end of 1970’s. Company faced a severe problem again. Something had to be done and quickly. The brothers had vast experience in utilising small logs. Therefore with Kauko’s lead the brothers started to develop a saw machine suitable for small logs. Their intention was also to build an own sawmill to further support the company finances. The forests planted after the war were about ready for their first harvest and there was a prediction that a saw machine for small log was about to become a sought-after product.

”Over the years I have seen a grand hotel or two but more hospitality than was shown at farmhouse Kyhhäys quarters, I have never come across again”.

- Hannu Rautio
